I'm going out of business. Julian Video Center was first opened by Derek Leonard in 1980. I bought it in 1990, nineteen years, what awonderful ride. Not making a lot of money, I found value in my loyal customers, most became fantastic friends. All had a story to tell and I had time to listen. I only hope I gave you some enjoyment and an hour or two of escapism, I never wanted a "shop" in town, but when the video center became available, I thought if I could rely on the locals, great. I'll take it. You see, Julianites are a tough, reliable, loyal lot. I was right. The 90s were the heyday of video. I had all the latest movies on VHS. Now it's DVD and I've got over 1,000 to sell along with all of my fixtures. The new format is Blu-Ray disc. FYI I always try to keep my customers informed. They kept me informed too... about the family, children, pets and property! That's what I'm going to miss the most, seeing my friends so regularly. I have seen children grow up, go off to college or to war. I remember when the mothers were pregnant with those children. Some have returned to have children of their own. rll miss you and your children, and your children's children very much. So come by and see me before I'm closed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support. Julian You Are The Greatest! Love, Larry Bowen Dear Editor, Her we go again! More property bought for Volcan Mountain Preserve and mostly paid for by the county. Even if only part is paid for by the (~ounty, it's too muchl! The County is crying poor, can't fix this or build that, but they can fund land purchases that most of us will never see or use. Dave Van Cleve said in your front page article "The public will have a rare and beautiful corner of the world." What he does not say is only if you want to hike miles to see it! Why not open this and other portions of your "preserve" so all can use it? Parking lots, short term RV or tent camping, bike trails? I know why, the County can't afford it, they have no $$$. Some of that $1.78 million could have gone to clean and fix roads, and trees that have gone clown and are still down in Julian and throughout the back country. Thanks Bruce Strachota en~il: ;,com \j But - Didn't I Just Give You $50.00 Last Year? by Kevin Dubler Well, yes but... And, wasn't that supposed to build the new fire station? - Well, yes but... And, now you want another $50.00? Well, yes but.., let me tell you where we are on the long road toward a new station. The primary reason for the seemingly endless delay is also the primary reason for some very restrained celebrating. We are in the process of securing 6.4 acres of land from the estate of a long time local resident. The fiduciary involved in the transfer of this property has been extremely helpful and open to requests and queries made by the fire district. The attorneys for both parties (the estate and the district) have been very congenial and cooperative in seeking to resolve any minor issues. All of us seem to be of one mindset and are truly seeking the most expeditious conclusion to transferring the property. Basically we are slowing down the rest of the forward momentum to allow the land acquisition to proceed. "So why didn't you wait until you had secured the property before placing Proposition A on the ballot?" That is a very good questio;~ and one that has multiple correct answers. Part of the answer is because we were certain we had secured the property adjacent to Jess Martin Park. In the process of our "due diligence" in researching the properties we enlisted the assistance of a civil engineer to advise us on the feasibility of building on the ~'Jess Martin parcel". This engineer was recommended by our architects who have worked with him on many, many jobs. Unfortunately for us, most of his work is in Riverside County and you guessed it, they have very different rules covering set back requirements for cut banks and slopes as they relate to buildings. He advised that we would need to move "X" number of cubic yards of dirt to make a pad that would accommodate a station of the size we need. The fact is, in San Diego County, the rules are much more restrictive and would require the moving and re-compaction of over 10 times as much as originally estimated. And yes, we have replaced him with a local engineering firm (Pat Brown and Associates) and they a~'e doing an outstanding job of continued on page ~1 January 28, 2009 o Great CoSee, Tea, moothiea, Break4a , andwichea, Cookies, Pie, ~rea~ and the World Famoue OFr Volcan Freeze. 19 1 Main gt. ca]] in an order: 1906 Still Here !
