Then along come Valentines day, as has seemed to happen so often the past couple of years a lovely white blanket greeted locals when they awoke Tuesday morning, as we had around six inches of the frozen water in town with even more out Cuyamaca way. Wednesday say most all of it melt away before a second dusting arrived early Thursday. That too melted quickly. Someone forgot to tell the flatlanders as town was invaded all weekend with those looking for snow. Mt Laguna was clear and crsp with pleanty of snow on the ground for throwing and a little sledding, for those that made the trek. Spring officially starts March 20th. It only comes around every four years and it is happening this year. You've got it! Leap year - February 29. The library is planning to host a leap year party on Wednesday, February 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 or so. There will be food, music, video games, Wii Sports and/or Karaoke. The plan is to have a party with a Sadie Hawkins theme. But apparently I was sold a bill of goods when I was in high school because the Sadie Hawkins dance was always scheduled at the end of February.I assumed it had something to do with leap year. The practice was that the girls invited the boys and, dressed alike and the girls paid. Now that I am a librarian, I can look up to find that the real Sadie Hawkins day is in November and schools have long stopped the practice of Sadie Hawkins February is Library Lovers Month Celebrate your local library this month. For The Love Of The Game Basketball season is in full swing and for the Division II Teams it allows them to be able to have a fun, healthy, and competitive spirit to the game of basketball while they continue to learn basic skills. In this division the grades are from third to fifth. There are four teams in this division: The Great White Sharks are coached by Mr. Tim Fletcher (4-1), The Blue Cougars coached by Mr. & Mrs. Gregor (2- 3), The Warner Winners coached by Mrs. Osuna (3-2), and the Hotshots coached by Mr. Andrej Dominquez (1-4). Although there are only four teams in this division, it allows dances, apparently they are politically incorrect or something. Whatever the reason, I am inviting all of you to come to the library on the evening of February 29 to have some fun and a down home gathering of the community. If you want to help in providing food or just want more information, please contact Colleen at the library, 760-765- 0370 More information will come out in a poster and in next week's paper. I look forward to socializing with all of you on this bOnus day of 2012. 2012 is a leap year, which means that it has 366 days instead of the usual 365 days that an ordinary year has. An extra day is added in a leap year-- February 29 which is called an interclary day or a leap day. Why is a Leap Yea r Necessary? So we have an excuse for a party! Leap years are added to the calendar to keep it working properly. The 365 days of the annual calendar are meant to match up with the solar year. A solar year is the time it takes the Earth to complete its orbit around the Sun about one year. But the actual time it takes for the Earth to travel around the Sun is in fact a little longer than that-- about 365 V4 days (365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be precise). So the calendar and the solar year don't completely match the calendar year is a touch shorter than the solar year. It may not seem like much of a difference, but after a few years those extra quarter days in the solar year begin to add up. After four years, for example, the four extra quarter days would make the calendar fall behind the solar year by about a day. Over the course of a century, the difference between the solar year and the calendar year would become 25 days! Instead of summer beginning 'n June, for example, it wouldn't start until nearly a month later, in July. As every kid looking forward to summer vacation knows calendar or no calendar--that's way too late! So every four years a leap day is added to the calendar to allow it to catch up to the solar year. everyone to be able to play each other and have a fun, friendly competitive attitude. The Julian Youth Basketball (JYB) stresses the impc rtance about developing player understanding about the game of basketball, but at this level in this division it begins to allow the players and teams to become more competitive. They keep score, the level of play is much more difficult, and they have practices throughout the week. At this level the kids play full-court basketball with a zone defense and are learning how to transition from offense to defense with basic plays.
