I .... , ,z: ! : IIIII ..... .... :: : ;:: River Park Foundation To "Save the Source l" On March 13 from 9am to Noon, the San Diego River Park Foundation will team up with the Allied Climbers of San Diego, the Ramona trails Association and REI for a multi-layered volunteer service project at the headwaters, or source, of the San Diego River. The public is welcomed and encouraged to volunteer for one or more of these wonderful opportunities. Included in this package of events is a trash removal project at El Monte County Park in El Monte Valley. The San Diego River Park's Clean and Green Team will take to the valley while the Allied Climbers will head up to the surrounding hills and crags to remove accumulated trash and debris in hopes of providing a clean and healthy park for the people and wildlife that frequent the area. El Monte Park, at 88-acres, is one of the original parks in San Diego County. The spectacular rocky face of El Cajon Mountain, commonly known as El Cap, rises high over this beautiful area, dominating the other mountains that encircle this valley. Meanwhile from 9am-3pm, the Ramona Trails Association will work along the Cedar Creek trail also removing any trash or debris along the route and will employ the use of a trained pack horse to assist in packing out any garbage that is located. The Association will meet at 9am at the Thornbush trailhead near San Diego Country Estates. Beginning at 10am on the same day, another River Park foundation volunteer group will head up to the Inaja Memorial Picnic Area over looking the san Diego River Gorge for a beautification project performing maintenance work on the picnic benches and grills at the site, removing any trash and also holding an educational talk on the importance of the San Diego River to our past, present and future. After these projects conclude, an open house and tour of the 516 acre Eagle Peak Preserve will be held from Noon to 3pro. Eagle Peak Preserve is owned and managed by the River Par' Foundation and has been set aside in perpetuity for the benefit of people and wildlife. The preserve will also mark the end of the planned 40 mile San Diego River trail. The court rejected the county's position that its three to four year, $7 million vegetation management project was a short-term project addressing an immediate, emergency occurrence. Hence, the project is not exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). "Removing dead trees nearly two football field lengths distant from roads and structures in the backcountry will not significantly reduce fire risk to people as the county claims," said Richard Halsey, director of the Institute. "In fact, besides potentially damaging habitat, such action may actuallyincrease fire risk by introducing flammable weeds, giving people a false sense of security, and wasting taxpayer money that could have been used to create defensible space directly around homes and communities." Requiring the county to conduct a public review of this project will allow objective scientific evaluation and citizen participation to help ensure public funds are used in a way that will protect lives, property, and natural resources in the most effective manner.
