Throughout the past six years, I have been tirelessly working my way through the various ranks of scouting. I am just one step away from the highest honor attainable in boy scouting, Eagle Scout. This great achievement is not earned without quite a bit of work on my part. Besides the obligatory 21 merit badges, a scout must organize and carry out a community service project for an approved group. The military does not get enough thanks. These brave men place their lives on the line to ensure our basic freedoms as Americans. I have decided to place the focus of my eagle project on the military, I feel as though it is the least I can do to thank these men for their sacrifices to their country. On April 3, 2010, I will be sponsoring a free father-son day of fishing and fun at the Mataguay Scout Ranch in Warner Springs. Working closely with the San Diego Armed Services Y.M.C.A, 200 Military fathers and sons will be given a day of fun in the sun absolutely free of charge to enjoy the company of their families without the stresses of war. Part of the Eagle Project process includes fundraising. Luckily, due to an extensive network of support, most of the materials needed for the event were donated to me. One small loose end remains untied. The American Legion Post 468 has agreed to sponsor the lunchtime activities for the troops, but I feel it necessary to also provide some light snacks for the hungry fishermen. To facilitate this, I must raise two to three hundred dollars to purchase this food for the event. From you, the residents of Julian, I ask for a small donation. Any amount of money would be greatly appreciated, but if that is not possible for any reason, I simply ask for your kind thoughts and prayers in my endeavor. Any excess will not go to waste, but rather donated to the American Legion or the San Diego Armed Services Y.M.C.A. Please carefully consider donating to this worthy cause. If donating by check, please make them payable to Justin Van Bibber. Your donation is greatly appreciated, and I will be eternally grateful for your contribution. Thank you, Justin Van Bibber, Life Scout -Troop 690 P.O. Box 698 Julian, CA 92036 Dear Editor, For several years now, the local Julian Cuyamaca Volenteer Fire Department has been hosting a fire-service exploring post. I, personally, have been attending for a little over 3 years. The post takes in high school students from Julian High school and requires a 2.0 GPA, as do all regulation extra- curricular activities. The post tries to simulate the realities of the fire service and the explorers are divided up into Fire-Fighter explorers, Explorer-Engineers, Explorer Captains, and an Explorer Batallion-Chief. Meetings are held every Thursday at the volenteer fire station. We have an assortment of activities we do at every meeting, ranging from a review of Infectious Diseases (about a 100 slide, slide-show), to a competetive uphill progressive hoselay between our two crews. We are currently working on our volenteer firefighter certification, so that dictates the majority of what we do at meetings, as to meet the requirements. Every summer we hold an academy, lately at Camp Winaka in Pine Hills. This academy is 3 days long and covers nearly all aspects of firefighting. We perform simulations of nearly everything that requires firefighters in Julian. Thank you for your time and I hope you are more informed on the explorer post. Sincerely, Dustin Jenson Hello everyone, The Julian CERT Program has already begun the planning for the first Countywide CERT Exercise of 2010! Please distribute the attached flyer to your CERT members for the exercise that is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th in Julian! CERT members are encouraged to bring their family members to volunteer to play the role of victims. However, everyone must RSVP in order to ensure we have enough supplies and safety personnel. This will be a great opportunity for CERT members to refresh their skills, meet other CERT members, experience the Big Shaker (earthquake simulator), meet McGruff the Crime Dog and Smokey the Bear and have some fun! We will also need a couple of additional CERT Program Managers to attend, so please check your calendars!
