To the Community of Julian
and Surrounding Areas,
All students have basic needs
for learning. One of these needs
is textbooks. However, due to
our nation's economic crisis, our
state's budget cuts, and overall
lack of funds for education, our
school does not have the money
available to give our students
that basic need. I am an English
teacher at Julian High School
and am writing to ask you to help
the students from Julian High
School purchase new textbooks.
We have a need for 240 new
English textbooks. The current
textbooks were published almost
fifteen years ago. Each year we
keep thinking that the state will
Since they are so old, students
have to share in the classroom
with books that are missing
pages, are almost unreadable,
or in general poor condition. This
is no way for students to learn.
I don't want my children, when
they get to high school, to suffer
because of things that are out of
their control, and I certainly do
not want my students to suffer
now. A quality education is so
valuable and too important to be
overlooked. I want the parents
of our students to rest assured
that their children are getting
the best education available and
can be competitive with other
high schools because of the
curriculum they are studying. I
personally want to ensure that
I seek out every opportunity to
acquire textbooks that are up-
to-date, so my students can
receive a quality education and
learn what they need to in order
to graduate high school and go
onto college if they so desire.
On average, English textbooks
cost approximately $100. We
need sixty textbooks per grade;
so, $6,000 per grade is needed
to ensure every student has a
