Several organizations set up very attractive displays to encourage volunteers to get involved. There is a wide variety of opportunities available to get more involved in, in our community. (CERT, Country Christmas, Apple Days, Julian Day at the County Fair, Triangle Club & Melodrama, Sheriff's Senior Volunteers, Julian Pioneer Museum, Julian Womans Club, Friends of the Library, Julian Historical Society, Ca. Wolf Center, Greater Fire Council of Julian, Horizons Gate, Cuyamaca State Park and the Community Gardens Group). Also, an extra special thanks to the JHS Junior Prom Committee for holding a bake sale that day. If you would like more information about volunteering with any of these organizations, please contact Tracy at 760-765-4758. Tracy Turner Julian Merchants Association Dear Ms. Harvey I read your column every week and enjoy it very much. I like your style of writing and I like what you write about. Your newspaper is delightful, and we buy it each week. This letter concerns your column "We Need Your Help." I am a definite proponent of shopping locally and try to do that for gifts and supplies. I have many favorite stores there and do all of my clothes shopping, bird food shopping, and gift shopping there. Since my main residence, however, is San Diego, purchases in Julian are not vast. One note on a comment you made about things being unique. Our family had a big laugh about that because at Christmas our daughter always comes up and does the Women's Club Christmas tour with me and we buy gifts in Julian. She bought a "unique" gift at one of the shops for a coworker. When she returned home in San Diego and went to work on Monday, there was the identical item in the pharmacy gift shop! This was no longer a "unique" gift for a coworker. Before Cuyamaca Woods was mostly destroyed by fire, I was an active member of the Fire Safe Council, and we did a fund raiser Poker Run. It was a lot of fun except for having to "hit up" the local merchants for small donations of gifts for the Poker Run. It was not fun for me to beg but most of the folks I asked readily gave something for the cause. We made sure that % / 92036 / / / emoil: I came from; the gift was marked, the sheet telling about the gifts identified the donor and a thank you note was sent to each business. I agree with you that we should really thank these folks by shopping in their business. Thank you for reminding all of us about this. Thanks for providing our community with your excellent weekly. Marcy Diehl Cuyamaca Woods From The Publisher Here I go again, since we took control of the Julian News in 2004 we have tried to impress uponthe local organizations that publicity for their events is their responsibility to get to us in a timely manner. We publish every week, the deadline is (and was before we took over) Friday at noon, for the next weeks paper. We impose this deadline to give people a sense of urgency in getting their information to us. This is so we can then do the work of "setting" copy for the paper. Sometimes this means converting hand written notes on scraps of paper or constructing an informational advertisement into something that is presentable. The problem we have is a lack of understanding of the simplest principles of "getting the information out" - The sooner the better and more often than not. Many groups and organizations wait until the week before their event to get any publicity posted, even longer to get it to us here at the paper... I am not going to be so vein as to believe that everyone in the back country reads the paper every week, enough do that information is then spread "word of mouth" and your message gets delivered. The point I want to impress upon everyone is that as a "Community Newspaper" it is nice to know what is going on in the community .. we can not cover all the events, and we certainly can't be at all the meetings to find out when plans are being made for the next great ... (fill in your event). As an example I can point to the various youth sports programs. Only baseball seems interested in promoting their activities... softball has started too? How many teams are there? Who are the sponsors? No one has ever dropped us any note to say we exist, consequently we have no information. As a Community Newspaper we rely on YOU to help us out. We do not have a staff to roam about and find stories.
