"Trials"
by Carmen Carter
Sometimes I pray that You might pass
this bitter cup away from me:
And ease this ache within me quickly,
'Lest I break and die, You see.
F0r I am fragile, helpless, yes,
To pass these trials You give to me:
So I call out to get Your help,
That You will lead to victory.
For, Heavenly Father, I must grieve,
To find that I am weak like this:
Your presence I c0uld never leave,
For I would die without Your kiss.
So help me please when ! am 10w,
Give strength to weakness I possess:
In trials such as these, Bear One,
I need Your loving tenderness.
We all must face these trials, it's true,
And all of us are sure we'll fail;
But when we know that You are there,
To help. hope can prevail.
So give us strength to come right through,
To triumph even over death:
The resurrection will renew,
Our mortal life to Spirit "breath."
PASSOVER CELEBRATION ON APRIL 19
Congregation Etz Chaim, the only
Jewish presence in Ramona, Julian and
Borrego Springs, will celebrate
Passover at a congregation Seder on
Saturday April 19th at 4 PM in the
Rotunda of San Diego Country Estates,
16911 Gunn Stage Road, Ramona. The
congregation has been holding these
annual seders since 1981, when the first
one was organized through the joint
efforts of AI and Marcia Wollner and
Dr. Fred and Sandy Arsham. This year
the seder will be conducted by Rabbi
Elizabeth Goldstein, with all members
being urged to participate in reading the
Haggadah. A Pot Luck supper will be
served at the conclusion of the service.
Participants are expected to bring a
main dish and either a salad or dessert.
Only foods which are acceptable for
Passover will be served.
Passover is the story of the Jews
Exodus from slavery in Egypt. This
year the holiday starts at sundown on
April 16th. Jews all over the world will
gather around their tables to relate the
story which is found in the first half of
the Book of Exodus, with chapters 12
and 13 serving as the focal point of the
historical narrative.
Passover is the prime example of a
festival that celebrates deliverance. Each
Jew who participates in a Seder
symbolically is reliving the Exodus from
Egypt in Biblical times.
The Passover Seder is carefully
structured to involve children
meaningfully and to motivate their
interest.
Traditionally the youngest child
present who can read, starts the Seder
by asking The Four Questions. The rest
of the Seder service consists of answers
to those questions. It overflows with
symbolism. For instance, each item on
the Seder Plate which is the centerpiece
of the table, represents a significant part
of the story: from the roasted lamb
shankbone which represents the lambs
blood that was smeared on the doorway
of each Jewish home so the Angel of
Death would "pass over" their homes; ,i:
to the roasted egg which represents hope ,,'
for the future because it has no i,
beginning and no end and therefore €;
symbolizes the unending quality of life; ,J,'
to the ground horseradish root which ..
symbolizes the bitterness of slavery; and ,
the green vegetable which recalls the
meager food available to the Jewish ,:
slaves; as well as to the salt water which ",
represents their tears, all are very ,,,:
meaningful. Passover became Judaisms 7;
greatest holiday because it marked the -,;',
emergence of the Jews as a people who ,
accepted the Torah as the basis for .,
Jewish life. ,;
To make reservations for the .,'.'
congregation seder or to ask any
questions about it, please call 760-789- ,,2

accommodate everyone. ,,
