This is one of a series of vignettes about daily life on a US military base Kiki wrote while she was in Baquba, Iraq. This is an ongoing series, presented in diary form. October 25, 2006 -Visitors from Baghdad are amazed at how often we go out. They don't say "out" of course. They say, "into the Red Zone." Baghdad used to be divided into the "Red Zone" and the "Green Zone" but the latter became politically incorrect. Now it is "International Zone" or "IZ". "Red Zone" remains. Some things are hard to erase. When our visitors want to show they know about being on a FOB (Forward Operating Base) they say "out of the wire." Then they look around with a little smile because They Know. They Know How It Is. We don't say "Red Zone." After all, it's not a red zone, it's our city. We do say "out of the wire" occasionally but we're on the FOB which is small, and we know how that is, so we mostly say "out." Sometimes we just say "downtown". Going downtown in Baquba is an operation. It starts about six on Saturday evening, at the end of our all hands meeting when we talk about the coming week's schedule. It's a bit like an auction with people bidding on seats and in my mind's eye I hear Marcus (Major Snow) saying, "I've got a Monday a Monday a Monday..." Eventually it's all sorted out with Sara and Hisham going to the Agricultural Director-General and Greg meeting the Business Center board and so through the days. Each weekday morning the HMMVs line up for radio and other checks. We assemble between two containers under the camoflauge net (for shade, not protection) to listen to the briefing. Sgt. McKay runs over where there have been incidents who sits where, and drills in case of whatever. Climb into our seats and fasten our helmets. On with the eye-protection and ear-protection. Along the dirt berm and dusty track to the gate. Pause for the count. On with the warlocks. A small prayer as we turn onto the road. We're on the way to town. We're going out. Ulysses Grant oj the Poncho Villas Rattlers sprints to third base. Ulysses batted 3for 4 and took a "hit by pitch" base. Joey Ramano scores of the the Jerky Hut Scrappers 16 runs. The Scrappers beat the Rattlers 16-15. The Jerky Hut Scrappers' Zachary Schuett has his eyes on the ball. Jacob Sheppard, Gage Baay, Frankie Alvarado, and Eddie Phillips also had great days at the Park. SofaKings At Baileys For A Reunion The SofaKings - Jef Poremba, Harry Joe Reynolds, Lyn Castillo, playing the Blues and having fun at Baileys Saturday the 17th at 8:00pro.
