The Premiere Festival of A New Oh how far we've come from the hippie days in the sixties with cheap one-stage festivals like Woodstock or the Monterey Pop Festival. On April 17th, before this article will have been published, this generation's premiere music festival, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will have taken place. The festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and for the first time will be lasting three days and ends on Sunday April 19, 2009, This year's headliners include The Beatles legend, Sir Paul McCartney, on Friday the by Conor Gernandt 17th, the popular Las Vegas rock group, The Killers, on Saturday the 18th, and the all time great 80s British pop band, The Cure, on Sunday the 19th the final night of the festival. The festival tokes place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California and has taken place their every year since 1999 except for in 2000. In past years the festival has taken place on the last week of April but this year it is taking place a week earlier and the promoters are hoping to find cooler weather conditions with the new date. Tickets are $99 per day and $2.69 for the entire festival. Quite large compared to the festivals in the sixties, which were sometimes free, or only a couple dollai's. The Coachella Festival's music menu ranges from indie- rock, electronica, and hip-hop, to alt-folk, reggae and R & B. This year not only are legends Paul McCartney and The Cure performing, but also historic acts in music such as, Leonard Cohen, Morrissey, Perry Farrel, and Henry Rollins. Also featured at this year's Coachella are up incoming indie groups The Fleet Foxes, TV on The Radio, and Peter, Bjorn, and John. From the rap and hip-hop genre artists MIA, Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco, and K'naan will be performing, and from the folk genre artist Conor Oberst will be performing. One notable local San Diego act performing this year is The Night Marchers who are led by ex-Rocket From The Crypt frontman, John Reiss. The event has several stages and tents each playing music continuously through out the day. The main stages are the Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent, Mojave Tent, and the Sahara Tent C. Its venue the, Empire Polo Club, was first established as suitable for large-scale rock events after November 5th, 1993 when Pearl April 22, 2009 Triangle Club Scholarshi Applications Available The Julian Triangle Club is pleased to offer academic scholarships to graduating seniors Any graduating senior of Julian High School, Ray Redding High School, Julian Charter School, or home school who resides in the Julian High School District boundaries, planning to continue his or her education may apply for these scholarships. Six years later on October 9th, and 10th, 1999 just three months after the horribly failed Woodstock 99 the first actual Coachella Festival was held. Due to .what happened at Woodstock 99 the festival didn't offer on-site camping until 2002. The first headliners included Beck, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, and an artist that is also performing this year, Morrissey. The first Coachella Festival made no money so the promoters decided to take a year off and move the festival's dates to the last week of April to avoid the end of summer heat. The 2001 festival almost was a failure until late addition Jane's Addiction became the headliner. Their frontman, Perry Farrel, who created Lollapalooza, is also performing again this year. Each year the festival also features interesting installation art and sculptures. The event is now put on by an organization known as Goldenvoice. Coachella is not the only rock festival for this new music loving generation to enjoy. They, like most of their parent's generation, need more. There is most notably the Burning Man Festival, Bonaroo Festival, Lollapalooza, Bamboozle, and left Bamboozle. There is also a new thing this generation has that the other didn't to fulfill there need and that is touring festivals such as, the Warped Tour, Taste of Chaos, Projekt Revolution, and the Bamboozle Road Show. With all of these festivals and many more small and large scale festivals occurring around the world there is no doubt we are in an new age of music lovers. A new age that ~nuch resembles the original age of rock and roll lovers. As Heard On The Streets Of Julian by Eric Stamets Earth's Seeds Of Life For some time there has been much speculation about how life originated on Earth. A paper given last week at a prominent astrophysics and space symposium revealed that research on samples collected by the International Space Station showed where what are called "the seeds of life" came from. Scientists have pondered for years about whether the compounds that make up our DNA were synthesized by lightening strikes on what they call an oceanic "primordial soup" (why they call it soup, I don't know-it probably tasted very bad) or perhaps organic compounds or virus-like materials were able to ride here and survive on meteorites. Now both theories have been proven wrong. The space station samples showed conclusively that the chemical precursors of our DNA and life- yeah, that includes you- originally came from waste that would be analogous to human urine that was dumped as aliens cleaned out their space ships into space and our upper atmosphere, just like trains used to do along the rails, as they visited planet Earth many millions of years ago,. I guess the aliens had never heard of Earth Day and if you look at our Earth now, you can plainly see that improper disposal of litter and intergalactic waste can lead to a lot of environmental damage. Confidence is the hinge on the door to success. t - Mary O'Hare Dumas Banking i: Checking Savings i Home Equity : Business Banking ~j~ 2033 Main St., Julian ! 765-2765 Member ~lC Rabobank Accounting - Tax Planning LITERS & DYER, CPAs, LLP CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS Income Tax and Accounting Full Service Firm Rebecca Luers, CPA Jan 119~g CPA Masters Degree i~ ~x af~'(m Personal attention to your special needs Wynola (:enter 4367 Hwy. 78, Suite ! 12, P.O, Box 1934 Julian, (L~ 92036 Td: 760 765-0~ Pax: ?60 765~0150 Email: t'ebecca@l~a.cont Mortgages AmeriSave MORTGAGE CORPORATION Save lltr~.
