Music starts at 8:30 in "the corner". While Mesa Blue will be the largest combo in the "After Hours" series, their music is ideally suited to the intimate setting. Chris DelPriore (guitar, vocals) describes their music as a fusion of jazz, rock, Latin and blues. With fifteen years of performing and recording together, this quartet of Jeff Stazny percussion (Joe Rathburn, Jake's Mountain), Omar Ramirez on bass, and Claudia Previn Stazny's vocals, is exciting in both their original music and their version of covers familiar to any audience. Their three part harmonies are tight. Excellent, creative musicianship will make for an exciting evening. To preview their music, check out their latest album (I still call it an album) Looking Down the Road on CDBaby/Mesa Blue. There is no cover at Romano's. The "After Hours" menu is available during the performance along with your favorite libations. The bar tends to fill quickly and based on standing room for the Judy Taylor show arriving timely will get you a good seat. The character of light in the coastal counties creates special atmospheric effects. Moisture in the air near the coast softens values, quiets the landscape and adds violets to the shadows and sunlit areas. An example of this effect can be see as the sun goes down in Mesa Grande (which has a face to the ocean) and is known to plein air painters for the often rosy glow at dusk. Early 20th century California plein air painters like Edgar Payne and San Diego's Maurice Braun reflected the feel of this light in a new approach to plein air painting that they developed and named California Impressionism. These painters were inspired by the vibrancy of color and freedom in the landscape paintings of the French Impressionists and by the beauty of California itself. There has been a renewed interest in plein air painting in the last decade and we are seeing a second wave of artists discovering the joys of painting the California landscape 'en plein air'. Many plein air painters in our time are learning the truth of feeling and the expression of soul that painting from a direct and intimate relationship" with nature inspires. The history of the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery plein air exhibition begins with the participation, assistance and mentoring fifteen years ago by well-known San Safety is important in everything you do, especially banking. Encouraged by Sowinski's suggestions, gallery owner Annie Rowley found artists who had a genuine passion for landscape painting out of doors, painters who from time to time leaned toward eating, sleeping and breathing plein air 24 hours a day. There is a hardiness in this group of artists: the challenge of doing one's art despite weather and Photo by.K. Hotelling wind, the relentless search for the painting spot that calls. Some say that there is the romance of the 'western hero' in California plein air painting. Stan Sowinski passed on after an illness earlier this year. Santa Ysabel Art Gallery notes the large debt of gratitude to Sowinski for the gift of the gallery's annual plein air exhibition.
