Carton Short-term CDs Many people depend on . Bond ladders -- lf appropriate certificates of deposit (CDs) to for your situation, you can provide extra inco. Yet CO teqtiaily. gaini extm income rates have been fairlylow for a ;tl?Sugh a stfteg, known as a while. In recent months, in fact, one-year CDs were paying about 0.5%, two-year CDs topped out at around 1%, and five-year CDs paid in the 2% to 2. 3% range. Those rates are scanty enough, but they can seem even lower in an economic environment marked by rising food and gas prices. Before you consider alternatives, keep inmind that CDs still offer a key advantage: safety of principal. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) typically insures CDs up to $250,000. And since CDs are relatively short-term in nature, you don't have to worry about locking away that money for long periods of time. So there can be a place for CDs in the fixed- income portion of your portfolio. However, during times such as these, you might consider looking at additional options, keeping in mind that, when seeking greater income, you'll likely be taking on more risk. Let's consider a few alternatives: Fixed annuities -- Many people buy fixed annuities to supplement their retirement income. But most annuities also allow you to take up to 10% of your account value each year without penalty. Plus, the interest rate you receive on a fixed annuity may be more competitive than that currently paid by a CD. Keep in mind, though, that annuities are not backed by FDIC insurance, and any guarantees are backed solely by the paying ability of the insurance company. Additionally, early or excessive withdrawals may be subject to penalties. If you believe a fixed annuity might be appropriate for your situation, speak with your financial advisor. bond "ladder." To build a ladder, you buy several bonds with varying maturities -- short-, intermediate- and long-term. Once you've constructed your ladder, you could gain some advantage in various interest rate environments. When market rates are low, you'll still have your longer-term bonds earning higher interest rates. And when market rates rise, you can reinvest your maturing short-term bonds at the higher rates. But if you need income in addition to your regular interest payments, you can get it from the maturing bonds. Unlike CDs, however, bonds are not covered by FDIC insurance and are subject to credit risks. Bonds are also subject to interest rate risk: When interest rates rise, bond prices generally fall, and you may lose some or all of your principal if you sell your bond prior to maturity. But by holding your bonds until maturity, you can avoid loss of principal, assuming the issuer doesn't default. Dividend-paying stocks- Some companies have paid -- and increased -- their stock dividends for many years now. If you don't need the dividends to boost your cash flow, you can reinvest them to help boost your ownership stake. However, companies can reduce or discontinue their dividends at any time, and since stock prices fluctuate, you risk losing some or all of your principal. By exploring alternatives to short-term CDs, you may find other appropriate investments that may better position you to reach your financial goals -- so look around to see what's available in the financial marketplace. Rattlesnakes are found in the many canyons, trails and around homes throughout the region. Encounters between rattlesnakes and dogs will eventually occur. The dogs' inquisitive nature makes them vulnerable to the rattlesnake's bite and venom. Despite veterinary care, lasting effects of the venom may still compromise the dog's health. Thus, the best protection is for the dogs to avoid the rattlesnakes all together. 2011 Rattlesnake Avoidance Clinic - Saturday, June 4th, 2011 High On Kennels 26920 Mesa Grande Rd. Santa Ysabel Lincoln Demlng Unit Post 468 On Saturday, April 30, Spencer Valley actors took part in the San Diego Student Shakespeare Festival. Nine Spencer Valley students performed the wrestling scene from As You Like It. Stage fighting was blocked by Don Winslow. Each year students from elementary schools, junior highs, and high schools perform scenes from Shakespeare's comedies, histories, and tragedies. The event is organized by the San Diego Shakespeare Society who promote knowledge and enjoyment of Shakespeare by young people. This year there were six stages spaced on the Pride. Scenes and themes ranged from cave people performing a selection from Much Ado About Nothing to troupes in full-period costumes. Four hundred students from 32 schools took part in this year's Festival. Opening ceremonies took place at the Organ Pavillion, followed by a parade of costumed student actors that wound through the park and ended at the various stages. Most schools prepare only the scene they plan to bring to the festival. Spencer Valley, however, brings a selection from the complete play it performs each March. Spencer valley actors performed with poise and , clarity under the challenging circumstances of ambient noise and being called to the stage at a moment's notice. One student participant said, "The judges hardly laughed the whole day, but we made them laugh." Another said, "We did a great job, and all the costumes were fun to see." % CORNISH GAME HEN Served over Wild Rice Vegetables, Roll, Tossed Green Salad Dessert } ) slO.OO Friday May20" slO.OO -- 5:30 until 8 -- "-"" or Until S01d Out Donation .Jvm'. A Real Dirty Story Each Spring my sister-in-law would get geranium starts from me. So for Easter that year I had a little flower pot at each place setting with a sprig of geranium in it. She of course thought what a wonderful way to get her geranium starts. After the big Easter dinner I said, "Roland, have you ever eaten dirt?". He was leaving to work on the pipeline in Alaska the next day and the whole family had gathered to wish him well. I casually picked up my spoon and took a spoonful out of the flowerpot in front of me. I looked at it, looked at my brother, and said, "This doesn't look too bad, I dare you to take a bite". "Don't do it, Roland" my mother said. "You have to leave in the morning and you'll be sick". "Oh come on, Roland, It won't hurt you," I said as I took a bite. Always one to take a dare, Roland took a bite. Mom got mad at me, not him. I was leading him astray. Son Charley's girlfriend was aghast and said, "Don't eat that, dirt is loaded with germs. You'll get sick". I took another bite. Roland took another bite. My mother got madder at me. Allan took a bite. The girl friend fumed. Bonnie took a bite. Mom got madder. Pretty soon everyone had caught on; bUt Mom was pretty peeved at me and the girl friend never did break down and taste the "dirt". Recipe for dirt. Prepare chocolate pudding (let cool if non-instant) In blender blend Oreo cookies untilthey resemble potting soil Spoon pudding into foam cups or small, new flower pots with no hole in bottom, Spoon cookie "dirt" on top. Stick a flower sprig into each pot (Make sure flowers are non poisonous - I used geraniums.) Surprise your friends with your new wild, daring ways!
