Dog Day At Julian Feed For Spring Fling A perfect spring day to take the dog out and the feed store and Back Country Canine accommodated all who came with a whimsical not ready for Westminster "Dog Show". Judges John Baca and Kristen Miller had some tough choices to make in the four categories with over 20 dogs in attendance and most entered in multiple divisions. Hot Dogs, raffle prizes and dogs made it a fun day for all. Even the "loosers" had a good time and some of the dogs made new friends and so did the humans. Back in the day the US Embassy in New Delhi stood proud and beautiful for all to admire. It was designed by Edward Durrell Stone, the architect of Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and is a visual delight, inside and out. The two-story building's interior surrounds an open court with a large pool and cool greenery. By tradition departing diplomats ceremonially "walk the pond" before leaving for their next post. Fully clothed. It's great fun. In the 1960s any US citizen could go into the back buildings of the Embassy compound and eat at the cafeteria. Milkshakes! HAMBURGERS in the land of the sacred cow! And next door the Ambassador had opened his pool to all of us where we swam under the bright Flame of the Forest trees lining its sides. It seemed entirely normal to have a home, a place for an hour's R and R from the difficulties of daily life in India. It was, after all, our own American Embassy. That was a different world. Today the building is hidden from the public by high walls. Indian Special Forces Police have a permanent post by the front gate. There is a building with guards and an airport style setup to x-ray bags and bodies. You, American or not, leave cameras, cell phones and electronic gear at the gate and, in my case last month, an escort was needed to go up to the building. Inside i the Chancery (the main part of the Embassy where much of the info is classified) no one goes un-escorted, of course, and there is an additional security set up right across from the Marine Guard booth. It's a big bad world outside the Embassy these days and if you aren't on the inside you are, no matter who you are, part of the possible j threat. 1 For three years my office was on the right front corner of this building on the first floor. You can see it. right behind the stone screen. One day some ten years ago my staff called me to watch the man who had, until two years before, been American Ambassador to India, walking to the Chancery after being searched like any Tom, Dick or Harry. Now it's my turn. At least, in Julian, anyone can walk in the Town Hall without being x-rayed. above - Best Costumed, Charlie Floyd with owner Janet Ayers, Charlie was dressed in "authentic" Native American leathers. left - Most Talented, Knowme a 5 1/2 year old poodle owner Carolyn Campbell. right - Samantha Sheppard and Tilly the 10 year old Black Lab, judged Ugliest Dog. below - Luke and owner Clay Vaughn walked away with Cutest Dog of the day.
