Some of those opinions and advice are very helpful. This time of year, as I have time each evening after work, I complete some yard work. Fire season is here and our weeds are high and dry. This week I've been weed whacking. Last year I bought several sizes of string for my weed whacker, thinking each might have a good use. This year I decided to use them up before buying more string. The smaller sizes in width are more trouble than they are worth when I use them with my 4-stroke weed whacker engine. They tangle easily in the string head and they are no competition for a wild mustard plant. Smaller width strings are okay for straight runs against very dry grasses that offer little resistance, and I can use them to get a good cut to the dirt, which I have done. However, when they hit rocks, the rocks win the contest as easily as the mustard plants do. Wednesday of last week I bought thicker string. I found packages of .105 diameter string at Julian Hardware and brought some home for my next evening of cutting weeds. I saw David Walton in the hardware store, and he told me that the best string for weed whackers is square cut, not round cut. It makes sense. A square cut string has a cutting edge that round string lacks. Good idea. With the acreage that we have to mow and whack down, a more efficient string can make the job much faster and easier. Weed whacking string also comes in different shaPes, but I think the square, or diamond cut makes the most sense for me. After bringing home my thicker string and loading it into the string head, I found out that my weed whacker and I can cut through more weeds and thicker weeds in much less timethan when I use the thinner string. This may seem obvious to many experienced yard work people, people who have learned through the years what works best for their day to day weed whacker operations. But I don't have much patience, and though I've used these machines for over thirty years, I don't use them often enough to form opinions of what might work best. When I have time to get some yard work done; I tend to use the tools I have without looking for options that require shoPl ing and taking away time from the job I want to get done. I don't hesitate to ask questions, which is how I learned from Dave Walton. .ITCHELL WOODWORKS[ i bc# 929135 M C EI,L/WooDwo, All Your Tree Service Needs Commercial Progressively Old Fashioned Collectibles Gifts Jewelry 2111 Main Street In The Heart of Downtown Julian What I found out from talking with Dave and putting his knowledge to use is that with the smaller string I was able to cut about a two foot wide by fifty foot long swath along my driveway in one evening. iiiii iiii ! With the bigger string that Dave recommended, I was able to cut over a quarter acre of grasses, wild mustard and thicker weeds in one evening. When I use my weed whacker I wear wrap around glasses, jeans and boots. I'm just about ready to buy a face shield and some shin guards. Larger diameter string ,s powerful. Saturday, July 4th, 2009 Boomer is a sweet 12 year old neutered domestic longhair. He loves to receive attention and will purr non-stop when he gets it! He really enjoys having his handsome gray coat brushed, and will climb right into your lap when it's 'hairdo" time. He may no longer be a kitten in size or years, but this gentle giant still has a spring in his step, a lot of bounce in his jump, and for sure has as much love to give as any kitty! Although he is 12 years old and a big kitty, he is an excellent jumper! .He is a gentle-giant and can't wait to meet you, so please come ask for ID#A0905808 Tag#C826 when you come to the shelter. Boomer can be adopted for the Senior Fee of just $35. Chata is a unique looking 9 month old female Shepherd/Pit Mix whose owners could no longer care for. She is still a puppy and has a energetic and outgoing personality. Once she gets the chance to blow off some energy in the exercise yards with the volunteers, she enjoys interacting and playing with her human pals. Chata will probably reach a final weight of 50-601bs. so she would benefit from a home with a yard to exercise in. Her big ears and goofy grin will have you laughing and smiling in no time. Chata can be adopted for $69. ID#A1276075 Tag#C139. All adoption fees include vaccinations, spaymg/neutering (upon adoption), a microchip and free Vet visit. Dog fees also include a 1 year license.
