June 15, 2011 We Lost A Great Friend Sara Petite was originally scheduled to play at Wynola Pizza Saturday night. Because of the unexpected death of her drummer/boy friend she had to cancel. In loving memory of one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to know. A native San Diegan, Johnny Kuhlken was born in 1961 and attended Patrick Henry High School in San Carlos. He graduated from SDSU and worked by day as a copywriter at the San Diego Union-Tribune. He was 49. Kuhlken is survived by a sister, Janet Wray, and a brother, Brian. A memorial service was held Friday, May 27, at the Normal Heights Methodist Church, within walking distance of Kuhlken's last local performance(Adams Avenue Roots Festival on April 30 or with Brawley at Bar Leucadian on May 9). A founding member in Sara Petite's Sugar Daddies John Kuhlken (1961 2011) and Tiger Mountain Boys, he also was a member of the Nards, the Macananys, Brawley, and the Slidewinders, he passed away May 20, unexpectedly the morning of Friday, May 20, of a blood infection. Jiohnny played with or sat in with other bands such as Terry Hansen, Julie Mack, Rancho Deluxe, Greg Harris, Sneaky Pete. Johnny Kuhlken played the snare, the washboard, spoons, bells, whistles, car horns, jugs, beer bottles and other various instruments. From David Lewis: Few things leave you helplessly grasPing for the right words as much as the sudden death of a friend. Most of my friends are older than I, and when they pass on I can tell myself they lived a good life and it was just their time. The sudden death of Johnny Kahlken caught his friends looking for answers about life.., that they will never get. There is no way around it, life just isn't always fair. Looking for some answers is a waste of time. There is a lesson to be learned here though. Cherish your time with friends and loved ones. I will always cherish my time with Johnny. All tolled, that time amounts to no more than a few hours with Johnny. Johnny played back-up for Sara Petite, in life, and in her band. Watching him playing percussion of one type or another was how most of us came to know Johnny. Without fail, either before or during a performance, Johnny came by to say hello and be,a friend. Visiting friends who are old means you spend a great deal of time discussing health issues. Johnny wasn't that old but lately it seemed as though his health was the issue. The fact that he was dealing with pain, lots of it, did not keep Johnny from smiling. He would always end the conversation on a positive note. I always felt that he was not telling us everything about his health. Perhaps he got tired of explaining bad news. None of this will keep me from smiling when in my mind's eye, I see Johnny sitting on his little stool, or Cajon, The Julian News 7 Awards are team efforts and receiving an honor from J.D. CilE - AClCS bouncing to the music.., smiling at Sara when they caught each other's eye during a song. I've seen a lot of sadness and misery during my time at the cemetery. You might think that would help me comfort my friends in times like this. But experience with death has taught me nothing about words that might help someone though a loss like this. Perhaps the best thing we can do for anyone is to tell them we care and if they need us, we are here. Sara.. we are here.
