')199,000 gales-Associates gHI;lt, YLL gTKIOKLANP ICK PYl;K The Elk Horn Place: The Cascade Range, Southern Oregon, just west of Crater Lake National Park on highway 62. The year and time: summer, 1979. I was working on the Rogue River National Forest as a member of the Rogue River Roughriders, an Inter-Regional Firefighting Crew whose work station was situated in the small, mountain settlement known as Union Creek. Union Creek? Yes, a place composed of a Forest Service compound, a small restaurant, a National Forest Campground, and a small by Greg Courson number of private residences. Union Creek was tiny, and it was there that I lived through another summer of bunkhouse living with eighteen other men, most of us in our mid-to late-twenties and early thirties; firefighters with long experience, especially the foreman and assistant foreman, John Haas and John Lacey. Although Union Creek was tiny, the forests surrounding it were not. This was big timber country; mountainous, rugged, extending in all directions for miles on end. And a few of us were new on the crew. Lancer, Boles, and I had worked for John Haas on the Olympic National Forest for years, and after Haas transferred to Union Creek, we did the same a few years later. Adjusting to a new crew had its bright and not-so-bright moments. Sunny, Southern Oregon was culturally unique, far different than the deep, dark rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington. And I suppose an example would be something that happened during the first week of work on the Rogue. I was standing with Mike, Kim and a few of the others in a large dirt " ' ' I 14+ Lovely Acres with many mature trees and views to North Peak. 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath, 2,200 sq.ft. Hiome with attached 5-Car Garage and a 2 Bedroom,1 Bath Guest House. ] $1,195,000 area at the end of a logging road. We were on home district doing a regular day's work, talking during a short break, and Mike suddenly and very deliberately spit a large squirt of snoose juice on my boots. (Snoose juice is the tainted saliva from chewing tobacco). The brownish liquid splattered the entire toe-area of my left boot. I'd only known the man for a few days, so I didn't say or do anything, except continue talking about the subject we were on. I avoided the implication of the thing and, after Mike did this, he and the others didn't say or do anything either, and a few minutes later we all went back to work. It was later on that I told Haas about it. Haas looked at me and said, "That means you're okay." Did I just tell the reader about a different culture of people living in the Southern Cascades? Yes, indeed - and indeed a strange custom this spitting on boots. Yet this story isn't titled "Snoose Juice." Its title is "The Elk Horn." And why? Well, fire crews aren't only about firefighting. Fire crews are about people, and in a bunkhouse living situation life involves your crew mates and supervisors both during working hours and after working hours. And getting to know this crew was quite a learning experience for a few of us, including myself. Eleven miles west of Union Creek, along the main highway, was the small town of Prospect. And to Prospect, Lancer and I drove one night, on invitation for a beer at the local bar. Just one beer, at a comfortable little country place with a nice, rustic, wood interior, whose natural surfaces were their natural selves, not veneered over with anything more than some oil to make them shine, and quite a few people were there, all seeming to be in good spirits (no pun continued on page 11 Spectacular views from this 20 acre remote property on Volcan Mountain.
