8 The Julian News July 7, 2010 JULIAN LANP Up here in the Backcountry we grow trees, flowers, vegetables, weeds and buildings. The buildings are places to put stuff. You know, things you might need someday. Objets that might get you on Antiques Roadshow. Stuff that the odd cousin or friend has parked with you for a few months or years or decades. The buildings grow because the stuff accumulates. Or maybe vice versa. This place has lots of buildings. In addition to the house there is Grandfather's Shop (1949) and the Old Barn (1875 repaired about a century later), the New Barn/Millie's house (1951/1970) the white add on to the shop (early '80s?) that an older man lived in, who knows how, down on Frisius until he passed away, Uncle Ted's Shed (1979) and the chicken shed (1960 something). The shop with its' white ad-on, only in the back country All of them are packed with, er, history including the chicken shed which is also full of chickens so the history there is layered in white, uh, chicken you-know-what. There are iron thingys that are obviously old since they are rusty and obviously antique because we don't know what they are. There are old tools that may be antiques some day. There is an entire history in luggage. The luggage--an old curved top trunk or maybe it was new within the last century and now looks really old. Ed Skagen's trunks that took him to Korea in 1945 with his name, rank and address painted on in white. Heavy brown leather suitcase and hat/shoe box that traveled to Japan in 1955. A newer aluminum trunk took me to college in 1961. Japanese tea boxes, aluminum lined and covered with flowered (now slightly dirty through the decades) paper?cloth? that brought stuff back from Japan. Cheap Korean soft sided suitcases that are easy to take to the Thrift Shop or throw out since they wear out and are indistinguishable. There used to be a Tiffany woven sided bag with leather trim that was going to be valuable someday until the mice got at it. And why so much luggage? Well, you see, you can store things in it. We just might need those old sheets some day and who knows about all my letters from college. And we grew the buildings to put them in. The Bell Fund rasing contest winners, Jethro and Airabel with their grandmothers enjoyed a Candied Apple catered lunch.
