One of the activities was the Gold Nugget Scavenger Hunt. Children were directed in the Gold Rush Days program to go to Cabbages and Kings and pick up their instruction sheet for the hunt. They were told to go to eleven shops up and down Main Street and look for a Gold Nugget in each shop. When they located the Gold Nugget they had to answer the question listed on their sheet that went with that shop. When all questions were answered they were to return the sheet to Cabbages and Kings. The Merchant's Board picked the winner at the Merchant's picnic held at Menghini Winery on July 15th. Adele Delgado, owner of the Julian Candy Basket (2116 Main St #2D upstairs), holds the winning prize for the Gold Nugget Scavenger Hunt held during Julian Gold Rush Days, June 20th, & 21st 2009. The items in the winning basket all came from her shop. Some of the goodies are:-a-darling stuffed beagle puppy; a little red wagon with a little stuffed turtle inside, the turtle makes bubble sounds; a bird weather reporter; a paper airplane; a little creature on a bike that has a sucker in its back pack; and all kinds of assorted candy in the bottom of the basket; fifty dollars worth to be exact. This wonderful prize was won by John Funk, age 6, from La Mesa, California. The Merchant's Association wants to personally thank Adele for putting this prize together and mailing it to our winner. If you haven't been to Adele's shop lately you should go! She truly has a Gold Mine of goodies there! Victory Gardens and Food Co-Op In Julian On Friday, July 31st, all Julian residents and those in surrounding communities are encouraged to come to the library to share ideas for starting a food co-op in Julian. This will go hand in hand with our Victory gardens which we started this Spring and are encouraging others to begin. The idea is that we have organically raised produce for our households and community to enjoy, as well as receive the health benefits and joy of growing. This project is a continuation of the People's Food Link currently very active providing organic food stuffs for participating members in and around the Julian area. We know that some of our neighbors are having a difficult time economically and our hope is that we can share our produce with those in need. Ourhope isthat the co-op can also make wholesome and less expensive food available to the community. Vee Lumpkin says she welcomes our produce and other food items for her food program at the Town Hall. Those who now have extra produce from their garden may want to share a row or two of veggies. Please join us in the Air- Conditioned Julian library on Friday, July, 31st at 3:00 p.m. Your interest and ideas are welcome to help get this movement off and running in Julian. For question you can call either Laurel at (760) 765-0138 or Kathleen at (760) 765-2548.
