'm a visitor - a guy from San Diego who has always considered Julian to be that cool little hideaway town in the hills - that place to get away to with the wife. My point is that I love Julian and have since I was a kid. So here I am, in town staying at the Julian Hotel with my wife for a quiet anniversary weekend away from the noise and people and obnoxious gadgetry and loud lights of city life. No cell phones or computers or TV, and just the minimum lighting on Main...just enough to get by in a town that's mostly asleep by 9. How cool is that? Well, the little lady and I decide on an evening stroll to take the air...up one side of the street and down the other, just for a nice walk and make mental notes on eateries for the next three nights, and as we crest the rise on the southeast entrance to town, there it is - the gas station...the only one mind you, even Julian should have one...with this big, obnoxious white and red plastic sign that looks like in belongs on the front of the old Pussycat Caberet downtown 'Dago years ago or some 24-hour mini-mart in National City. Maybe on a bail bondsman's office in El Cajon. "You ding 'em, we spring 'em" What are they thinking? It looks like crap. It doesn't belong. It has to go. And I do have the right to say... I love Julian, always have... or I wouldn't bother. Don Albares Jr. San Diego Letter to the editor: August 21, 2009 To the communities of Julian and Borrego Springs: We've lived, worked, played, enjoyed nature, raised children, worshiped, and have a host of friends in both the Borrego Springs and Julian communities. Life has moved on, and we'ved moved, as many of you know, to Winchester, Virginia. We're settling in, and moving forward with school enrollment and work. Thank you for all, who have been part of our lives. Until we see you again, Tim, Danette, Casey and Hannah Heinlein Hello Mountain Gardeners; Are there any of you out there that have a portion of your property that you would care to be used for a community garden as in the old WWll days for Victory Gardens? Those gardeners who would be planting a some veggies would chip in for the water bill. If you are interested in this please call: Laurel@ 765- 0138 or Kathleeen @ 765-2548.
