And unfortunately, "tolerance" has come to mean "forced acceptance." Frankly, you're right to keep your daughter away from coed sleepovers. Putting a group of testosterone-charged teenage boys in a room overnight with a group of 15-year-old girls is like putting a liberal Democrat in a room full of money and telling him he can leak at it, but he's not allowed to grab it and spend it. I'll bet you donuts to dollars that both rooms will have lots of grabbing while backs are turned. One will be emptied of cash, the other will see an increase in population There's no need to speak with the other parents. Stand your ground and let your actions do the talking. Your decision will speak volumes to other parents. So do some counter-programming. Allow your daughter to have a good, old-fashioned girls-only sleepover. She'll be with her friends, you'll will win over other parents. and you can supervise and write the rules of the party. At first, your daughter and others will call you lots of names, but at least one of them won't be "Grandma." TIMELY TIPS by Kate Worth LEMONY FRESH -- Slice fresh lemons on a cutting board then remove the slices to a plastic, resealable zipper bag It's very handy to have them available for iced tea, ice water, etc. -- Kathy H. RODENT DETERRENT -- To keep pesky rodents from invading your home, boil some water and put in mint or pepper- mint tea. Then put the mixture in a spray bottle and dispense all over the house. The critters can't stand the smell and will stay away. AdineW. OPEN COMMUNICATION - When rny child reached puberty, he found it difficult to come to me with questions, problems, etc. I was alarmed at how he was withdrawing when we'd previously had a very healthy, open relationship. To encourage him to talk to me, I gave him a notepad and told him he could jot down any concerns or questions there. It gave him a way to express himself without being embai'rassed and kept the lines of communication open between us. --JillC. PERFECT SLICE - It's always so hard to get the first slice of pie out without making a mess. I've found that once you make the first two cuts for the first slice, if you make a third cut as if to form the second slice, it comes out quite easily and intact. -- Maria P. FRUIT SMOOTHIES - My kids love fruit smoothies, particularly in hot weather. However, ice cubes always manage to dilute the mixture. Instead of using them, I use frozen fruit bars in the same flavors as the smoothie. Yum! --Trixie B. NOOKS AND CRANNIES - rve always found it difficult to clean my blender because dirt gets caught between the buttons. To remedy that and keep my blender clean, I use a nail brush to get in between the tiny spaces. -- Jan R. Share your special Timely Tip with our readers Send it to: Kate do DBR Media, Inc., P.O.
