Now, a new advertising campaign is promoting the idea that through a national volunteer effort, it's possible to help more people attain that "good life." The goal is to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to help children succeed in school. United Way is making this major volunteer pledge as part of its goal to cut by half the number of young people who drop out of high school and in response to the findings from its recent report, Voices for the Common Good: America Speaks out on Education. This report is based on United Way's community listening tour, focus groups and a national survey which found that 91 percent of respondents believe that communities must take greater responsibility for what's happening with their children. The education goal is one of three targets United Way has for 2018. Charley had asked him for the best way to get to the Indy 500. The ticket people advised us to get there very early in the morning. Another person said it takes two hours just to get through the main intersection if you arrive after eight a .m. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, and our hotel was an hour south in Bloomington. We kicked around the idea of parting with another hundred bucks, and after much discussion, decided to go for it. Charley called "Larry" on his cell phone. He said to call again on the morning of the race on our way up. "Bring cash", he said, "no credit cards". He would then give us the meeting place. Race day arrived and we headed north. Charley called, "We're about a half hour from Indianapolis". "OK, we're meeting at an elementary school just off Hwy 491. Take the schoolhouse exit and I'll meet you at nine o'clock. I'1 be driving a black and gray stretch limo. Wait for me there." We found the exit and the school. The place was swarming with sheriff cars, motorcycle cops, and officers on foot. Charley asked a lawman for "Larry". "Just wait back there", he motioned to the chain link fence surrounding the school. We waited and watched the proceedings. Cars an(] buses drove up and were directed into a couple of lines. Each driver was given a blue or yellow star shaped hanger for the rear view mirror. He was told to turn on his headlights and emergency flashers. Occasionally a car was sent back to the fence by us without getting "starred". Every few minutes a line of cars and buses left. A sheriff with lights flashing and siren screaming led and followed each caravan. A motorcycle cop accompanied them. As a caravan left, one of us "fence sitters" was directed to the end of the line, minus the police issued star. The sheriffs milled around and seemed to know a lot of the car drivers. .... Afte[~meC~ot out .and asked one of the other 'i~[ence sitters", how this worked. The man hemmed and hawed and finally said,~'You jus~i~d of need to know a cop." At nine the limo pulled into the yard and was greeted by a cop that obviously knew Larry. Charley went out to meet them. He handed Larry five twenties folded into a wad. Larry didn't count it, but quickly concealed it in his right hand. "Larry's" cop pal reiterated the instructions about the lights and flashers and sent us to join the end of the line after a blue Ford. Charley returned to our car. "Larry" shook his cop friends' hand and the money disappeared into the cop's pocket faster than cookies at a Scout meeting. Louise and I watched the smooth exchange take place. We were taken aback by the clandestine mood of the mordent. It was time for our caravan to leave. We folded in as directed at the end of the line. We were without a star, but were safely inside the bracketing sheriff cars. The motorcycle cop would speed by, sliding to a stop in the middle of each intersection, to assure our passage safely through the red lights. Then charge ahead again, red lights and siren screaming, to the next crossroad. Several.times an officer at an intersection noticed our missing mirror hanger and tried to motion Charley out of the caravan, but Charley pointed at the cars ahe~ld of him and stepped on the accelerator. When we got close to the track, the front cars turned right and the motorcycle cop pulled alongside and motioned Charley to follow him. Hordes of pedestrians were forced to make way for us as he gd!ded us, with red lights and siren blasting, directly to parking lot "C" Wt11~re we had parking tickets. He then disappeared into the massel~ of people streaming to the track. Without question that was the most exciting entrance we ever made anywhere. We had not simply parked, we had arrived! It was Worth every penny! We were still on a high from all the excitement as we gathered snacks, drinks, panchos, umbrellas, cameras, and stadium Seat cushions and trekked to the track. We hadn't gone far when it started to rain. We broke out the ponchos and dashed for shelter under the bleachers while it poured.
