The latest "Dancing With the Stars" lineup was recently released. This was to usher in the "Dancing With the Stars Season", formerly known as "Football Season". The latest dancing spinoff shows have also been announced. In the past, law enforcement officials have set traps to catch fugitives (most criminals are not that smart) by notifying them of various things that are due them and then simply arresting them when they show up to collect. The latest is going to be a version of "Dancing With the Stars" called "Dancing With the Fugitives". The fugitives are notified that they have been selected to appear on a dancing show on national TV and will receive a lot of money, but when they show up, they are arrested. But the great part is that they are allowed to compete on the dancing show and the losers go to jail for a long time. They will dance their criminal butts off. An even more heartless show will be 'Dancing With the Handicapped" in which people who can't possibly do the moves are mercilessly berated by the judges. The TV producers have been heavily criticized for their crassness, but they say it sells and so~beit.~,~he sky is the limit on the n~if-~. permutations for these S hbWS"l' and also planned are "Dancing With the TV Loggers" (some dance routines with chainsaws), "Dancing With the Antique Appraisers", Dancing With the Interior Decorators", "Dancing With Pawn Shop Operators" and the most anticipated of all, "Dancing With Oprah" since she now has time on her hands and wants to have fun. Of course all this will be available on "The Dancing Channel". After this the next thing coming is for people who can't stand TV shows, it runs nothing but commercials on yes, the Commercial Channel. I was in my truck headed to the office and for some reason I wasn't listening to the radio like I usually do. My phone rang and it was my Mother. She was loud and animated which was not like her and she asked if I knew what was going on. I asked her what she was talking about, and she said, "We've been attacked." Who's been attacked? "Us, America, they flew a plane into the World Trade Center and killed people by the thousands. Turn on your radio!" I pulled off the road and tuned in. The reports were surreal, confused, horrific. Experienced reporters were babbling and emotional. I was a few minutes from the office. When I arrived my secretary had the TV on and was crying. By the time I got there the second plane had gone in. Shortly after that, the Pentagon was hit and but for the sheer will and courage of Americans on flight 93 that caused the crash of that jetliner, no one could guess the additional terror that would have ensued. Where were you? Did you go to the streets with your family and neighbors? Do you rememberthe images of people jumping from hundreds and hundreds of feet? Do you remember the groaning, .twisting Steel Structures falling into that thick cloud of dust and dirt and filth that has sickened New Yorkers to this day? Do you remember the call for blood and the confusion of whose blood would be spilled in retribution for this horrific act. We were numb, bloodied and confused. When it came to light that this was not the work of an enemy nation but an insidious enemy that wore no uniforms, saluted no flag and whose way of life was so differe nt from ours and hated us so much that they would sacrifice themselves to harm us, we were more confused. After ten years of war, I hate the word conflict, after ten years of war, we have a much greater understanding of who our enemy is. Our enemies are larger and more amorphous than most of us knew, though there are those among us that. have been sounding the alarm for many years. Like always, in the history of this nation, the brave among us pick up the battle flag and defend us. They bleed and die on battlefields all over the world but this attack on America was different. They brought it here. The battlefield was here, and this time it was firemen and policemen and ordinary, no, extraordinary Americans leading, rescuing, and selflessly saving the lives of others often times at their own peril. In reviewing the videos of 9/11, the horror, the pain and helplessness are still there for me. In the past few days rve asked about fifty people if they remember what they were doing that day and all of them do. When you ask older folks the same question about Pearl Harbor they remember too. My Dad remembers the attack when he was fifteen. That day at the local Navy recruiter's office, the line went around the block with youngsters refusing to give up their place in line all night long. I remember my Daughter getting a call from her recruiter the night of 9/11 telling her to report immediately. Only a few years before that she and her little sister were running around the observation deck of the World Trade Center looking down the Jersey shore at where Daddy grew up. I remember watching those monstrous towers being September 7, 2011 erected when I was a kid. There's irony there, seeing them go up then crash down and now watching them rise again as a memorial. I must be getting old because rm not nearly as tough as I used to be when I think of the terror of that day. It saddens me when I see our enemies have changed our way of life. We've all made sacrifices since then. Try getting on an airplane with a pair of mustache scissors or more than 3 ounces of liquid. Never used to need a passport coming in from Mexico. And the vigilance we need as terrorists are trying to bring it home again. It seems like such a small thing for a free people, but are we more secure? Are we freer, or are we ceding our rights and freedoms to be safer? Are we afraid? We have confronted a world that hates us for no other reason than who we are. Maybe they're envious of the life we've created for ourselves, or the freedoms we enjoy, maybe they're religious zealots, maybe they just hate our face. But there was a time continued on page 11 PETS OF THE WEEK Joclyn is a 6 year old spayed Maine Coon who weighs in at a whopping 141bs!
