September 9, 2009 2nq Ann Julian Scarecrow 9 The Julian News Free "on An, admission and free Larger than life American Folk Art Scarecrow Creations are displayed and compete for $600 in prizes. Be sure to vote for your favorites! This is a wonderful autumn family project or a chance for individuals and groups to get creative. This is Julian's' 2rid annual Scarecrow competition and display, with winners determined by "Peoples' Choice" on site voting. The winners in each category are determined by tallying the votes cast by the public. Anyone can vote for their favorite scarecrow (one vote per visit). The 8 scarecrow prize categories for this year are: Apple Crow, Kids Only (12 and under, parents can help with construction), Animal Head Crow, Farmer John Traditional, Giant Scarecrow, Laughing Scarecrow, Scary-Crow, Pumpkin Head/Jack-O-Lantern Scarecrow. This year there are more and larger prizes, 24 in all! Each category will win a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize. All prizes are gift certificates are from local businesses. 1st place winners will receive a 35 dollar certificate, 2nd place: 25 dollars, 3rd place: 15 dollars. Prizes for each winner will be chosen by random drawing. Deliver Scarecrows to Wynola Farms Marketplace Sunday, September 20th, from 10 AM ARB wants to see the permits, that RAMCO has for upgrades to the gas station. Lighting issues also were discussed. Actions Taken By The Julian Architectural Review Board The Julian Architectural Board reviewed four items presented at its regular monthly meeting on Sept. 1 in Town Hall. Orchard Hill Country Inn. Approved changes to sign design presented by Darrell Straube. KO Korral. Approved temporary signage as presented by Alan Rogers. Ramco Petroleum. Reviewed the following design issues with Victor Daniel: five signs do not comply with Julian Historic District design guidelines; lighting fails to comply with design guidelines as well as Dark Sky guidelines; changes in design and structure of awning have not been approved by the ARB; changes under construction as of Aug. 13 have not been presented to the Julian ARB for approval. Daniel agreed to return to the next meeting. JMA New Member Brochure. Approved language regarding the need to present exterior design or signage plan changes to the ARB for approval stamp prior to undertaking any alterations to existing buildings within the Historic District. Juan Bautista de Anza Charter School Opens Doors For Second Year In New Location Juan Bautista de Anza Charter School opens on September 8 in their new location, suite 583A in the Mall at 587 Palm Canyon Drive. This year in addition to our exciting field trips, photography exhibitions, and Horse Wisdom/Leadership class we offer a full range of online classes for grades 6-12. Our new blended education model allows students to excel at their own pace by doing extra classes online. Students can add classes in art, personal psychology, French, Spanish, German, Latin, Mandarin and English. There are over 90 fully accredited classes to choose from and college credit is available through advanced placement classes. The online school will include monthly field trips of interest (by reservation) for our students, also a prom and graduation at the Jacobs Center in San Diego. In order to meet new friends, an in-house version of facebook, "Breakzone" allows all Advanced Academics students to meet each other using their passwords. The best part of both programs is that the students get to choose their own pace and use their learning styles to advance rather than sitting in a classroom.
