IIft&tv$ Phone & Utilities i My Thoughts by Michele Harvey Thoughts And Opinions Each week I write my thoughts and sometimes I write my opinions. We all have thoughts throughout our day. We think about washing our laundry, buying groceries, taking the kids to and from practice, how long can we put off buying gas, where will we find the time to fit some yard work into our schedule. Thoughts come and go without judgments. Opinions on the other hand are our thoughts with qualifiers and judgments. Some opinions are harmless. I think our house would look better if we paint it yellow, the brown is too dark and depressing. I prefer driving Highway 79 to downtown San Diego so I can avoid the Highway 67 traffic snarls. Winter is my favorite season because I hate hot days. All of these are harmless opinions. However, many opinions are not harmless. Why won't that jerk move his truck? Why in this world did she think that blouse would look good on her? Who does she think she's talking to? Oh Yeah, like their kids are perfect. Through the years rve received numerous emails telling me some fact that wasn't really a fact at all. rve received emails telling me about a bill before Congress, a missing child, a tangible reward of some kind from Bill Gates just for forwarding an email. People waste my time and the time of all the people they forward these emails to without checking the truth before forwarding them. In their opinion, everyone receiving one of their emails needs to pass it on because it is extremely important. I use www.snopes.com to check the authenticity of many of these emails. My brother uses www.truthorfiction.com, to check on the truth or falsehood of the emails rm writing about. Soon after the tragedies of 9/11/01 emails were circulated asking people to sign cards and letters to the survivors. They were actually created to build address lists for porn sites to use in marketing their sites. People who didn't check them for authenticity forwarded thousands of names and email addresses, enabling tricksters to enlarge their address lists. I complained to an old schoolmate who often sent emails that he thought were helping someone or some worthwhile cause. I told him that he should never ever forward emails asking for anything without verifying them first. That was my opinion. Did he learn a lesson? No. He simply told me that he didn't need to check things because he knew I would. That was his opinion and I disagreed with him so much that I quit accepting any of his emails. Opinions can come really close to gossip. If we keep opinions to ourselves they seldom hurt anyone. However, when we repeat our opinions, especially when we make them sound like fact, then they become gossip. Instead of saying, "In my opinion..." or "1 think..." or "1 believe..." which brings the idea back to that person, people sometimes say things as if they are true. Instead of saying "1 heard..." People often say "Did you know..." then say or write something they haven't verified. Thoughts and opinions can be the basis of interesting discussions as long as the people involved don't take things too personally and they end the discussion on a friendly note. Through the years rve had lots of discussions with people who totally disagreed with me. However, we agreed to disagree and respected each other for our opinions. Lively conversations can take place when two or more people discuss something a bit controversial. Problems arise when the participants take the whole talk way too personally. Lively talks are good ways to get to know people and good ways to get to know their feelings about issues. If you can discuss religion or politics without raising your blood pressure or voice; you are way ahead of many people, rm not sure why some people get so upset when talking politics and find that someone they are talking with doesn't agree with them. When someone gets elected to a political office and that person isn't one who I would have chosen; I live with the results and go on with my life. Some people just can't seem to find a way to adapt. I know people who thought the world would literally come to an end when George W. Bush was elected. They really got anxious when he was elected for his second term. I also have a friend who refers to Barack Obama as my president and not hers. Both of these opinions are out of line. It is my opinion that if a person doesn't like how our country is run; then get busy and do what you can to change it. I'm not talking about assassination, rm talking about getting involved. Whether or not I agree with the current Tea Party people isn't as important to me as my admiration for them and all people who actually try to change things in this country that they think are wrong. I think of the old cliche that says "Put your money where your mouth is." It means you should support something you believe in even to the point of putting money toward that cause. Don't just throw your opinions into the air hoping someone else will agree with you and do something. Right the wrong, or write the letter to a person who needs to know how you feel and can make the change that you feel is necessary. My friend Chris Tuthill did just that. She is conservative and has a radio talk show in the mid west voicing her opinions and her thoughts about taxation and other timely political issues. When she lived in Julian, she was one of the people who set up and ran the resource center after the Cedar Fire. She definitely has strong opinions on many subjects and like the quote; she puts her money where her mouth is. In her case; she acts and doesn't just talk. We all have thoughts and we all have opinions. They can be positive and as Wim Wenders once said, "The more opinions you have the less you see." These are my thoughts.
