As part of his job, he helps people living in Julian prevent their homes and properties from being susceptible to fires. The Greater Julian FireSafe Council focuses on public education especially at local events. In conjunction with John C. Heglin and Arlene Smith, local artists and members of Greater Julian FireSafe Council, Nicio came up with the idea of pins depicting the Golden-Spotted Oak Borer to enhance people's awareness of the problem occurring with this bug and local oak trees in San Diego County. This pest is devastating parts of the Cleveland National Forest and areas in the south of San Diego with no resolution in site as it moves north and east towards the coast. John has created pins of the Oak Borer sitting on an acorn. The bug is not to scale as it is actually much smaller. The pins sell for a minimum donation of $10 which goes to help to promote awareness of the problem.
