illllllllBlll l mlllllllilllllllm lBIl October 7, 2009 The Julian News 7 In Memory Wilf Becker 1932 - 2009 Wilf Becker passed away surrounded by family and friends. Wilf was born in Berlin, Germany in 1932. He emigrated to Canada and then the United States, settling in Julian. He owned an auto repair shop in San Diego and then became a San Diego Police Officer and retired from the force. He enjoyed traveling, racing cars, woodworking, hiking was a pilot. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He is survived by his wife Sayoko, his daughter Debbie and grand-daughter Jessica. Services will be held on October 9 at 11 A.M. at the La Mesa Masonic Lodge 4731 Date Avenue, La Mesa. Contributions may be made to: California Masonic Foundation-La Mesa Lodge # 407, PO Box 154, La Mesa, CA 91944-0154 John Carmine Silvester April 19, 1939 - September 25, 2009 Julian Centennial Apple Days Apple Pie Contest from Diana Garrett, Julian Women's Club The Contest was held on Friday, October 2, 2009. The contestants brought their freshly baked pies to the Julian Woman's Club by noon and the Judges arrived at one o'clock to start the judging. The Judges were: Liz Smothers- Julian Apple Pie Company, Charles Scott- Candied Apple Pastry, Barry Brunye-owner of Dudley's Bakery, Jeremy Manley-Jeremy's on the Hill. Fourteen entries were entered in the contest all unique and looking delicious. The judges had a difficult time selecting the winners. The Pies were judged in the following categories: Crust, Filling, Taste, Presentation, Creativity, and Recipe-Easy to follow. Each Judge rated each pie and the total scores were added up and the winners announced. The ladies who planned this event were members of the Julian Woman's Club: Diana Garrett, Chairman, Barbara Mitchell, Audrey Turner, & Jan Mattias. This year the left over pies were sold by the piece at the Apple Days Festival at Menghini Winery. Proceeds will go to the Woman's Club's Scholarship fund which provides scholarships to Julian High School seniors each year.
