THIS WEEK'S TIP: Halloween will be here before you know it. I don't know about
you; but more and more, rve noticed kids aren't trick-or-treating. Perhaps it's because
of the scary times we live in. There are crazies who prey on kids, and parents are
reluctant to let them go from door to door even if they're with them.
The Julian News 5
I've been doing house parties for years for my kids. We do all the traditional stuff -- bobbing for apples, etc. The
kids dress up and have a ball. The best part is, I can control just how much candy they can have. It's a great way to
enjoy the holiday. Here's another idea for that Halloween house party -- have a pumpkin decorating contest. Do this
with markers, no knives. The kids will love it, and you'll be keeping them safe.

Answers to Crossword Puzzle
There is something enigmatic about blueberries. They are titillating, yet altogether comforting and very American! They excite even the bleary-eyed at
breakfast when added to hot or cold cereal or used in muffins, biscuits, pancakes, and waffles. They're a sure hit in pies and tarts, crumb cakes, shortcakes, and
biscuit-covered cobblers; in fruit soups and fritters; and as sauces for custards and puddings. As jam and jelly, they're unsurpassed. Blueberries become luscious
polka dots in a mixed fruit bowl; they win fame as the topping on New York-style cheesecake, not to mention in New England's specialties like blueberry grunt, and
hot blueberry dumplings with blueberry sauce and thick cream.
In additional to their visual appeal, intense blue color, and sweet delectable flavor, blueberries are nutritious. They're a convenient way to get your Vitamin C
and fiber along with a healthy dose of disease-fighting.antioxidants. The blueberry is a Native American species with deep roots in America's history. By the time
the Pilgrim's arrived, the American Indians were already enjoying these juicy blueberries year round through very cever preservation techniques. They were dried
in the sun then added'whole to soups, stews, and meat; or crushed into a powder and rubbed into meat or perhaps as an anti-oxidant preservative. The powder
would also be combined with cornmeal, water, and honey to make a pudding called Sautuathig. The Pilgrims learned to appreciate blueberries from Indian's gift of
blueberries, which helped the new settlers make it through that first cold winter.
Blueberries also have a place in the annals of folk medicine. Their roots were brewed into a tea to help relax women during childbirth; their leaves steeped to
make a blood purifier. Blueberry juice and syrup also cured coughs, according to tribal medicine men. Modern science is discovering what ancient cultures have
long known: Blueberries are good for us in many ways.
Today's recipe is a simple dessert made with blueberries. You're sure to love it!
FRESH BLUEBERRY AND LEMON PARFAIT
1 (3.4 ounces) package instant lemon pudding
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup heavy (whipping) cream
12 gingersnap cookies, coarsely crushed (about 1 cup)
1 pint fresh blueberries (2 to 2 1/2 cups)
Prepare instant lemon pudding according to package directions, using the milk. In a medium-sized bowl with an
electric mixer at medium-high speed, beat cream until soft peaks form. Fold whipped cream into prepared lemon pudding.
In 4 or 6 individual serving glasses or a 1-quart bowl, spoon a layer of the pudding mixture; sprinkle lightly with cookies,
and a layer of blueberries. Repeat layers one more time, ending with the pudding. Refrigerate covered for about 30
minutes. Garnish with mint sprigs and blueberries if desired. Yield: 4 to 6 portions

MIND YOUR Ps AND OS|
An unfortunate trend has been spreading regarding bridal showers. That
is, some brides are being given more than one shower. Perhaps a favorite aunt
throws one, then the best friend -- you get the drift. This puts a huge burden
on te guests, who feel they have to give a gift at each event. This isn't the
case. If you find yourself in that position, you can opt to either bring a small gift
to each shower or just give one big gift at the first shower and give congratula-
tory cards at the others.
