8 The Julian News PET CORNER by Cleo & Brad Conrad It's no surprise that pets are getting pudgier and pudgier. After all, obesity is becoming all too common among us human beings here in the United States. Even children are developing diabetes at younger and younger ages due to their weight. What used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes is now hitting children, some as young as eight years old! The same holds true for pets who are overweight. They are prone to the same ailments as humans -- heart disease, joint disease, breathing problems, diabetes, and a generally shortened life span. If your pet is overweight, ask your veterinarian for feeding guidelines. There are even diet pet foods available which, like the same in people food, are lower in calories and fat. Exercise is important as well. Again though, consult your veterinarian. If your pet already has a heart condition, you don't want to exercise him so rigorously that he has a heart attack. Of course, kitties are difficult to deal with when they're overweight. In general, cats nibble at their food, preferring to return to it over and over during the course of a day. That's fine. However, reduce the amount of food. When it's finished, don't replenish it. Wait until the next mealtime to do so. To exercise your kitty, stimulate him with toys. Natural hunters, they love to chase at balls and play mice. Catnip toys get them going also. Paper bags (NEVER plastic) and boxes are cat magnets. They'll jump in and out of them and run around crazily. That's good for them. Last, but certainly not least, NO TABLE SCRAPS! People food is what will really packs on the pounds. As you become more diligent with your pet's nutrition, you'll probably find yourself doing so with your own. Both you and your pet can only benefit. (c) 2003 DBR Media. Inc. He is obviously a man who cares deeply about his high school students and also the younger children and parents in the Julian community. I want to thank him personally for the use of the football field by the soccer-playing children of Julian. We are grateful and appreciative to have a grassy and safe area for our children to be active in the great sport of soccer! AYSO is also grateful for the huge motivation contained in the little body of Joy Booth! She pushed the issue of safety and created a voice for this issue. She has that rare quality, not found in all people, of actually doing something about what is bothering her. Thank you to Brian Bristol, Joy Booth, and the Other Please consider helping us continue to improve our athletic programs and facilities with your participation in this tournament. In addition to golf participation, we have hole sponsorships available; and we are seeking donations of items for raffle prizesl Your assistance in making this inaugural event a success will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions about the tournament or Julian High School athletics, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your support of Julian High School athletics in the past; and I hope to see you on Saturday, October 25, 2003, at Warner Springs Ranch. Sincerely --Thomas J. Because of generous donations to athletics in the past year we have been able to outfit all of our athletic teams with quality medical kits.
