FFA Countdown Written by Joshua Savage and Dorotea Busalacchi Julian Future Farmers of America is kicking off the Second Annual Fall "Famous Pig" Drawing! Prizes will be drawn at the 2010 Julian Eagles Homecoming Football game on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 PM at the Julian High School stadium. Julian FFA members are selling tickets throughout the community all week long in order to raise funds for their leadership conferences, and farm improvements and help offset food cost at the San Diego County Fair. The suggested donation for the tickets is $5.00. As a thank you for your donation, donors will receive a 10 percent off gift redeemable at Jeremy's on the Hill. At halftime tickets will be drawn for additional prizes. The first ticket will be for of a blue ribbon quality market hog -- just under 100 pounds of custom butchered and smoked pork. Now that's "some pig"! The second ticket will be for a "terrific" 12 pound smoked ham and the third ticket drawn will be redeemed for ten pounds of "amazing" gourmet sausage. Julian FFA had a successful summer. We took a variety of animals to the San Diego County Fair and Ramona Fair. We had four different students win first in class with their hogs at the San Diego County Fair, and we are very proud of Katy Newgard who won Reserve Champion FFA _AOB_ Hog. At the Ramona Country Fair Allison Cauzza brought home Reserve Grand Champion for her market rabbits. We also had four of our students win first place market lambs at the San Diego County Fair and Ramona Fair. Two of our past graduates, Allison Cauzza and Ashley Brooking, received one of the most important awards -- The American FFA Degree -- for their dedication and involvement in the FFA organization. In addition to showing livestock through the FFA for five years, they have competed in parliamentary procedure speech and debate, job interview contest, attended leadership conferences, served as chapter officers, participated in numerous FFA and community service events and earned scholarships and awards for their agricultural entrepreneurship projects. Because of their on- going commitment to agriculture, leadership and community service they are among only 3% of the nation's FFA members to receive the American FFA Degree this year which will be awarded at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this fall. In September, FFA members attended the San Diego Section Leadership Conference at Mount Laguna where they learned leadership and team building skills: This year we are going to be participating in multiple leadership conferences and contests. These activities provide opportunities to learn real life skills that will be able to use every day of our lives. The members of the Julian FFA Officer Team are anxious to use their new Team Building skills to put each and every members' unique abilities to work this year. Community involvement and support are essential to the success of the Julian FFA. The "Famous Pig" drawing is the perfect way for you to show your support for student leadership development and agriculture in your community. For more information about the Famous Pig drawing or about how you can support the Julian FFA please contact Mr. Dale Fullerton, FFA Chapter Advisor, at (760) 765- 0606 ext 213. So, make room in your freezer, bring your Julian Eagle pride and your FFA donation to the Homecoming game on October 22 and help us build a stupendous year in FFA. Julian FFA is a youth organization designed to develop leadership and agri- science skills. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. We plan on placing our decorated donation boxes the weekend after Thanksgiving at various shops in town and schools. Our program is solely by the community and for the community. Only those residing in our 92036 zip code will be eligible to receive this package of food. We depend on the money contributions to purchase the frozen turkeys and hams, five pound bags of potatoes, bag of oranges, eggs, yams, cranberry sauce, some canned items. Please make checks out to either Vee Lumpkins or Barbara Simpson. Mark for Holiday Food Drive. Mail to: P.O. Box 2228, Julian, CA 92036 or bring them to the Tgwn Hall.
