Q: I recently inherited a copy of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass," published in Camden, N.J., in 1876. It is signed in ink by the author on the title page. A: Early editions of "Leaves of Grass" have become popular this summer, due in no small part to several excellent biographies of Whitman that have been published recently. It is interesting to note that when his masterpiece was first published, it was not successful. Only after he re- worked and expanded it several times did it find an audience and become an American classic.
