Community Yard Sale a Success I wish to personally thank Mike Hart at The Julian News, my assistant Maria Rainbow, the Julian Chamber of Commerce, and all the Julian area households who set up, attended and participated in the first ever community-wide Yard Sale. Apple Tree Realty paid for a massiveADcam paign and placed up to full page display AD's in 15 publications and newspapers throughout San Diego. This resulted in Thousands of buyers, who traveled from all over San Diego and attended our Julian Yard Sale event. On the event day, I traveled to various areas of Julian and interviewed some yard sale exhibitors and buyers. There were many ideas suggestions and responses, overwhelmingly positive. The following are some Email, and information we collected: 1. The Julian Coffee House reported running out of Yard sale maps early in the morning. 2. Merchants such as Wynola Pizza reported doing a very brisk business that day which they attribute.d to the yard sale event. The majority of participants throughout Julian reported they had between 50 to over 100 people visit their respective yard sale locations. Several reported selling 70% to 80% of their stuff. 3. Seller participants who did not put up adequate signage directing people from Julian's main roads to find their respective locations reported less than 50 people visiting their yard sales. 4. Neighborhoods who banded together and organized multiple sales reported being very pleased with results. 5. Some residents who wanted 92036 // / to have a yard sale but were in hard to find or get-to locations banded together and combined with neighbors that had better locations. Reports from those folks were also very positive. 6. Several buyers suggested that for any future yard sale events that it take place close to or right after the first of the month when many people throughout San Diego get paid Below I have included an Email received from one yard sale participant: Just wanted to send a note of appreciation for your sponsorship of the Julian community yard sale. In our opinion it was very successful. We had a steady stream of shoppers from 7:30 a.m. to after 4 p.m. and of those we asked, were from all over the city... La Jolla, Escondido, Pacific Beach, Lakeside and lots from Ramona. It was a fun time to visit with old friends, meet new and just enjoy the beautiful day in the back country. "One little suggestion I gave your secretary when I picked up the packet, if you decide to do it again, was to try to have the sale as close to the first of the month as possible as that's when a lot of people get paid, especially welfare recipients, teachers, some federal and state employees and some social security recipients. Again, thank you. In God We Trust In summary, Thank you all. Let's do it again next year! Best Regards, Rick Dyer The term "Ponzi scheme" is named for the pyramid investment scheme devised by Charles Ponzi in 1920. Ponzi promised a 50 percent return in six months but investors ended up losing millions of dollars.
